藤田 紫山

Fujita Shizan
7/1/1895 - ????

尺八

Born in 1895 in Nara Prefecture to a family of rice and grain merchants, he was adopted at the age of nine into the Fujita family in Osaka.
He showed an early aptitude for the arts and music.
In 1912 Fujita became a shakuhachi student of Toryū Wada. Four years later Wada-sensei introduced him to Nakao Tozan who became his teacher. Fujita liked the strict discipline of Nakao Tozan's teaching style and quickly excelled in his shakuhachi studies.
In 1920 he took the Jun-Shihan (associate teacher) examination and was given the name Shizan. He opened several branch schools around the city to teach Tozan-ryū shakuhachi, greatly helping to popularize the style.
Three years later he was promoted to Shihan (full instructor license) and made a member of the examination committee.
In October of 1928 he was again promoted to the rank of Chikurin-ken (Grand Master).
His hobbies included painting and calligraphy.
