Itō Reiu

伊藤 鈴鳥

Itō Reiu
10/17/1906 - ????

尺八

Itō Reiu (birth name: Teru) was born October 17, 1906 in Hakodate, Hokkaido. While working for the Japan National Railways, he studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Aoki Reibo I and Kimura Reiro, where he earned his teaching credentials in 1940.
During the 1960s he was discouraged by the increasing apathy towards Hōgaku (traditional Japanese music) and made great efforts to popularize it for a younger audience. At the same time he acknowledged that one of the central reasons for the lack of recognition and respect for Hōgaku at the time came from virtually abandoning the music in the public school system.
A long-time member of Reibo-kai, his career in the shakuhachi world spanned more than 40 years.
He was also a member of the Sapporo Kinko-kai and an officer with the Sapporo Sankyoku Association.
