Shibata Kunisuke
1/13/1891 - 9/25/1972

尺八

Shibata Kunisuke was born on January 13, 1891, in 3-chome, Torikai-honmachi, Fukuoka City. After graduating from Kusagae High School, he worked at the Fukuoka District Court, the Fukuoka Prefectural Civil Engineering Division, and the Tokyo Jiji Shimpo, etc., during the Showa era. From 1928 onward, he worked at the Fukuoka City Hall's Maintenance and Maintenance Division, Water Supply Division, and retired in January 1951.
At the beginning of the Taisho era, he entered the shakuhachi school of master Yamazaki Chikuin and studied for about 10 years. He moved to Tokyo with the aim of becoming an expert and studied under sōke Kawase Junsuke I, devoting himself to the shakuhachi. But in 1923 the Great Kanto Earthquake struck, and he returned to his hometown in vain. He then became active as an executive under Yamazaki's disciples. He also founded shakuhachi clubs at Fukuoka High School and Kyushu University, and taught the younger students, though in his later years he distanced himself from the world due to family circumstances.
