Takahashi Shōdō (Takahashi Hatsuki) was born February 10, 1899 in Yamagata Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Kawase Junsuke I, Mizuno Rodō I, and Araki Kodō IV (Baikyoku). He also studied shakuhachi making under Kato Yūdō. During his more than 50 years in the shakuhachi world he received the Hokkaido Bunboku Encouragement Award and was the head of Kinko-ryū Wafū-sha.
