Born May 12, 1928 in Aichi Prefecture, Naitō Shōho (Naitō Shōzō) studied Chikuho-ryū shakuhachi under Sakai Shoho (of the Sakai Chikuho I lineage), deputy director of the Chukyo branch of Chikuho-ryū, a member of the Kariya Masaka-kai guidance committee. He started teaching in 1967 and belonged to the Shoko-kai.
