Born on March 3, 1911 in Osaka, Nakamura Gozan (Nakamura Osamu) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Takatsuki Japanese Music Association president Ōhashi Kōzan and Hoshida Ichizan I. He performed and taught shakuhachi (starting in 1930) for more than 50 years and, at one point, he was invited by the University of Paris to give a lecture and performance on shakuhachi and its music.
