Hosoda Yōzan (birth name Gihei) was born in the Tohoku region of Fukushima Prefecture on January 6, 1890, where he studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi from early on, and he became a master and pioneer of the style. He was born as the eldest son of Hosoda Kotarō, into a family that had been in the clothing business for many years but, due to circumstances, stopped doing business in the 1920s. Gihei was very sickly at a young age, and did not stop taking medicine until the age of eighteen. However, he had always been a gifted musician and had already shown his talent for music in elementary school, so the shakuhachi was considered a suitable adjunct for his health care. He became very enthusiastic about the shakuhachi and convinced forty-five of his friends to sign a letter inviting Nakao Tozan to come to Tohoku to present a workshop. Nakao Tozan sent his representative, Ueda Miyamoto, in his place. After Ueda-sensei’s presentation, Hosoda was convinced that he needed to go to Osaka in January of 1909 and learn from Tozan himself. After a short visit home, he returned to become uchi-deshi at the Nakao Tozan residence in Kamisaka, devoting himself entirely to the shakuhachi. He became such an important part of the Tozan family that, when Nakao Tozan briefly fell ill in 1912, it was Hosoda that was requested to fulfill many of the headmaster’s duties. In May of 1913, at Tozan’s request, he was sent to represent the Tozan school in Korea, and set up training centers there. Eventually, he was sent to Seoul, Kanazawa, Tokyo, Manchuria, and elsewhere to help promote the school. He was promoted to Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) in 1918, and full Shihan in 1922. In March of 1926 he returned to Sendai to train teachers who had a strong influence in the region for many years afterwards. In 1927 he was promoted to the rank of Dai-Shihan (grand master). He served many times as Councilor to the Tozan-ryū as well as serving on the Examination Committee. He spent the remainder of his life with his wife and raising a family in his hometown of Sendai.
