A native of Kyoto, Genzan Miyoshi began studying the Tozan method of shakuhachi at the age of 12 under the private instruction of Tomii Shunzan. In 1971 he achieved the rank of dai-shihan, or grandmaster, and in 1983 he earned the title of chikurinken, the highest possible level in the world of Tozan-ryū shakuhachi. He has given concerts at Toshodaiji temple and at Yasaka shrine, a privilege reserved for only a few extraordinarily talented players.

He served as a cultural envoy for the International Community Foundation, visiting the United States, China, Morocco, and other countries. Moreover, he has received invitations to play in Germany, France, Spain, America, Canada, and Australia, where he performed to widespread acclaim. Not limited to traditional Japanese music, Miyoshi also plays a broad repertoire of classical, jazz, rock, and mixed genres, thus expanding the scope of his instrument. Genzan Miyoshi has recorded for a number of labels, including RCA, Apollon, and GMC.
