Studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi with Yoshida Seifu (from whom he recieved the performance name Shūfū), then with Araki Kodō III and Araki Kodō IV (from whom he received the name Shūdō), then also with Kimura Yūsai after Kodō IVs passing. Received his teacher's license in 1930.
