Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1888, Nagase Shōzan, (then Genji), upon graduating grade school, specialized in Chinese studies and bookkeeping. He also began the practice of Judo.
He began his shakuhachi studies under Tozan-ryū master Wakajima Yōzan in September, 1915.
He completed the first rank of Tozan studies by that November.
Half way through the second rank (Chuden) studies, Wakajima-sensei passed away.
He was accepted as uchi-deshi (live-in student) under Abe Kōzan, and completed his second rank in March, 1917.
He finished his third level (Okuden) studies in December of 1918, upon which he was accepted as a direct student of Nakao Tozan, the Soke (head) of the school.
In January he received his Jun-shihan license.
He opened his house to students in 1921, together with his wife, Wataya Kotoe, a koto player.
He was promoted to Shihan in 1929.
He opened his own Judo workshop in 1930.
In 1932, Nagase was one of the performers at a special Tozan-ryū concert in Okayama City in honor of the promotion of another local shakuhachi player, Kimura Yōzan, to the rank of Shihan.
