Eric has been playing shakuhachi for several years, but is a constant beginner. He began lessons with his primary teacher Michael Chikuzen Gould in 2007 in an off-again, on-again way. In 2020, he rekindled an original love for the instrument and began weekly lessons again with Chikuzen Gould via Skype. Eric also began Zen training in earnest in 2015 and received Jukai in 2016 under his teachers Jay Rinsen Weik Roshi and Karen Do'on Weik Osho and is currently a Shoken initiate. Eric views his shakuhachi playing as an extension of his Zen training and indeed views Chikuzen as his first dharma teacher. Eric began on a Shakuhachi Yuu and now plays a Perry Yung repaired Chikusen Tamai 1.8 from the 1980s.
