Born in Mie Prefecture in 1903, Tomii Shunzan was a politician and a medical doctor as well as a master shakuhachi player. He started teaching himself shakuhachi at the age of 17, then began studying with Nakao Tozan in 1921. He received his masters license (shihan) in 1931 and his grand master (dai shihan) designation in 1937.
