Lying on the tatami A golden bamboo Whispered sound The first time I saw a shakuhachi was in a Japanese farmhouse on the outskirts of Kyoto. No doubt I was enchanted. I spent the weekend making sounds. With zero background in any kind of music I wasn't sure I could ever really play the instrument. Fortunately, my friend working the farm, Bill Dean, was studying Meian Shakuhachi with Fukumoto Kansai who was then Kansu of Meianji. After a month playing with Bill he introduced me to Fukumoto Sensei who I studied with until his untimely death in 1976. I quickly forgot about musical challenge as I learned a tool for satori. From 1976 to 1985 I studied with Ozawa Seizan in Kyoto. A very kind man and gifted shakuhachi maker I have many fond memories of accompanying him for Take Tori. I received Menkyo Kaiden from Ozawa Sensei in 1979. During these years I made the acquaintance of Ohoi Yushin Sensei who continues to teach, influence, and guide my shakuhachi meditation. His play of Takiochi no Kyoku, first heard in 1975, continues to inspire my play as I aspire to his instruction, "Takiochi i sen buki."
