OASHISU - Shakuhachi, Koto, Cello, Percussion

[Genres]Moderne Musik
[Komponiert]James Nyoraku 如楽 Schlefer - Shakuhachi - 2010

Geschichte:

Oashisu (Oasis) was commissioned and performed by the Pearson/Widrig Dance Company in October, 2010. It is a site-adaptive dance and music composition of 25 minutes duration; a composer-choreographer dialogue among five dancers and four musicians with a score for shakuhachi, koto, cello and percussion. The choreographic language was created site-specifically in relationship to a gorge in Ithaca, NY, integrating the shape of the gorge and its elements—the water, the stone, the expansiveness of the space above and the restriction of the surface below, as well as the unique viewpoints of the audience. The environment fostered an abstract palette rich in detail, with very particular explorations of angles and corporeal architecture channeling the repetitive rhythms of Shinto architecture “discovered” by Pearson/Widrig over two research residencies in Japan.
