Born October 20th, 1896 in Katagai-cho, Sanbu-gun, Chiba Prefecture, Nakamura Kōzan (Nakamura Riichi) started learning the shakuhachi on his own and enlisted in the 15th Regiment of Cavalry in 1916 when he was old enough to be conscripted, but was discharged in June of the following year due to an injury. The following year, he moved to Tokyo to train in driving automobiles and, later in the same year, he worked as a practical instructor at Teikoku Driving School.
Around 1923, he began his study of Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Sugimoto Kōshū.
In April, 1927, he was introduced to Yasaka Reizan, from whom he received his first Chuden certification.
He worked hard training with Yasaka, advanced to Okuden in February of 1929 and, in September of the same year, passed the Jun-shihan (Associate Master) examination.
Shortly thereafter he opened a new Tozan workshop in Aizan, and later established teaching offices in the city as well as Chiba city.
He worked as a shakuhachi teacher in his spare time from his main job. He and his wife Hatsuko had three sons. His hobbies included raising small birds, bonsai, and collecting antiques.
