Nagano Tokuzan (Nagano Shin’ichi) was born March 10, 1904 in Miyazaki Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kodera Bōzan and Hoshida Ichizan. He started teaching in 1928. In a career spanning 50 years he was the head of the Nagasaki prefecture branch of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai, president of the Tokuyū-kai, and a member of the Tonou-sha. He received the Cultural Merit Award from the Governor of Nagasaki Prefecture.
