Sakai Ruizan
11/2/1895 - ????

尺八

Sakai Ruizan (Sakai Akira) was born on November 2, 1895 in Hiroshima Prefecture.
After graduating from the Junior High School in Zushi, Miura-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture in March 1913, he took a job at a company that manufactured graphite.
Three years later, due to family obligations, he left the firm to move to Kumamoto City, there taking a position as secretary in the city government.
He always looked at the office as more of a side job, but had a natural affinity for music and was determined to become a full-time shakuhachi teacher.
In February of 1918, while living in Tokyo, he studied under Tozan-ryū master Kamiya Hakuzan. He briefly switched teachers to study with Nishimura Kazan, then returned to Kamiya-sensei and stayed with him throughout the rest of his studies.
He and his wife Mitsuno relocated to Kumamoto a few years later.
He received his Jun-shihan (associate instructor) license and his professional name, Ruizan, shortly after that.
