Born on September 14, 1897, Matsuoka Senzan (Matsuoka Yoshito) was the son of Chikurin-ken Tozan-ryū Grand Master Matsuoka Seizan.
In 1915, he returned to Oita City and, by the end of 1916, had become his father’s student.
In May of 1921, he received a basic instructor license and opened his own studio as a professional shakuhachi master, and in February of 1923, he was given his Jun-shihan (associate instructor) license and performance name name, Senzan.
In May of the same year he performed in Beppu in front of the family of the Emperor, and in November he performed a piece for a Chinese diplomatic entourage.
In July of 1924 he moved to Fukuoka with his father to assist him in the development of Kyushu for the Tozan-ryū, and in October of 1927 he was promoted to Shihan (master teacher).
In March 1929, he was elected as a member of the Tozan council, and re-elected in March 1932. He performed in many special concerts in Kyushu, and was appointed as a member of the examination committee.
