Ōmatsu Kōzan (Ōmatsu Jin’nosuke) was born September 5, 1886 in Gakubunji Village, Ito-gun, Wakayama Prefecture. Upon graduating from elementary school he went to Osaka and entered technical school. He served in the military during the Russo-Japanese War, returning home in 1904 and relocating to Tokushima City to support his family. In February 1914 he studied shakuhachi under Tozan-ryū master Matsuo Shūyō, switched to Koizumi Kakō in September 1916, and finally settled on Koike Reizan I a month later. He successfully sat for his Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) license examination in February 1921, receiving the name Kōzan. In 1925 he was promoted to Shihan. In addition to receiving several awards for his playing, he was appointed as a teacher and a member of the examining committee for associate teachers in Hirakata three times beginning in 1923. In the spring of 1931, he returned to Osaka and continued to teach Tozan-ryū while also running a pipe manufacturing business. His hobbies included reading, writing, and shogi (Japanese chess).
