Born on October 16, 1903 in Yamanashi Prefecture, Hikawa Junpū (Hikawa Umeaki) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Yoshida Seifū and Kodama Gendō. He began teaching after the founding of the Yokoso Shakuhachi club in 1937. During his 40+ years in shakuhachi, he was president of the Gafū-kai as well as a councilor of the Japan Sankyoku Association.
