Born September 5, 1912 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Hirano Shōdō (Hirano Masudō) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Fukushima Chido and Kaneyasu Tōdō. In 1955 he received his Shihan (masters license) and began teaching. He belonged to Nihon Chikudō Gakukan. His career as a performer and teacher spanned more than 40 years.
