Hirota Shungetsu (Hirota Shigeru) was born June 13, 1903 in Kumamoto Prefecture. He studied Meian-ryū shakuhachi under Tsunoda Rōgetsu I. He started teaching in 1936. He belonged to the Mei-an Rōgetsu-ha. He performed and taught shakuhachi for over 50 years.
