Maeda Tanzan (Maeda Toshirō) was born on February 1, 1909 in Hyogo Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Chikurinken Katō Seizan. He was the director of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai Osaka branch and the head of the Tosu-kai.
