Born in Mie Prefecture, Maeda Meiho (Maeda Shinichi) studied Chikuho-ryū shakuhachi under Sakai Chikuō (Sakai Chikuho I). He began teaching in 1924 and was given the rank of Dai-Shihan in 1962. He belonged to the Nabari Chikumei-kai and had a career in shakuhachi for more than 50 years.
