Furukawa Keizan (Furukawa Toshirō) was born April 1, 1893 in Taisha Town, Shimane Prefecture. He completed Taisha Junior High School, briefly engaged in the sake brewing industry, then joined the Hamada Infantry Regiment in January 1912, and was discharged two years later. After receiving his instructor's license in September 1918, he worked his way up to become a full-time shakuhachi teacher in the same prefecture, Hirata-chō. Moved to Neima City in January 1919. In October of 1925 he was given his full Shihan license. He trained many students throughout the Shimane-Tottori region, and became one of the leading figures in the Tozan-ryū. He also excelled at composing music and received awards for his compositions in 1919 and 1921. He performed at the Matsue Special Concert in 1926, and was appointed to be a member of the master's examination committee in 1929.
