Ueda Chikudō

上田 竹童

Ueda Chikudō
10/9/1897 - ????

尺八

Ueda Chikudō was originally a shakuhachi player of the Tozan school, and was trained by the late Nakao Tozan. At the young age of 10, he began playing the shakuhachi together with his elder brother Kiichi, and from the age of 15 to 20, he trained as an uchideshi (apprentice) in the house of Nakao Tozan. Later, when his elder brother became independent, founded the Ueda school, and took the name Hōdō, they joined forces to establish the Ueda school as we know it today. The Ueda brothers' excellence on the shakuhachi was well known for a long time, and the Nakao Tozan had nothing but high praise for them. At the same time that his elder brother became independent, he returned the name of Shozan to Nakao Tozan and changed it to Chikudō.
The characteristics of Chikudō's shakuhachi was that it had a reputation for its rich volume, perhaps due to his abundant lung capacity.
“It is very good that the sankyoku world has been focusing on new pieces in recent years, but I would like them to study new pieces without forgetting the old ones. In both the koto and shakuhachi worlds, old pieces should be studied thoroughly, and the meaning of preservation, etc., should be considered carefully, and they should be played and played well. I would like you to study old koto music and shakuhachi well, especially those who have been appointed as newcomers to the art.”
In particular, he lamented that shakuhachi players and koto players in Osaka were not committed enough.
He was an important figure in the Ueda organization, serving as his brothers “right hand man”.
