Kobayashi Reijun was taught to play the shakuhachi initially by his father, Kobayashi Ichijō from an early age, and later completed his studies at the Shakuhachi Technicians Training Institute under Aoki Reibo II (a Living National Treasure) and Aoki Reibo III. While maintaining an important foundation in traditional music and techniques handed down from his predecessors, he pursues the shakuhachi as he believes it should be played today. He is also, like his father, a shakuhachi maker, and pursues the shakuhachi from the perspectives of both instrument making and performance, constantly researching and studying to meet diversifying needs. He is a member of the Japan Sankyoku Association and the Kinko-ryū Association. He is a member of "Fragment", a shakuhachi classical ensemble, and a member of Reibo-kai. Kobayashi Reijun is mainly active in the Kansai region.
