Miyuki Yoshikami began her classical koto studies from the age of eight with the late Nakashima Chihoko of Los Angeles and later with Kagawa Seishi of Tokyo’s Tomiyama Seikin school. She also studied contemporary Westernized koto styles with Eto Kimio. Her koto degrees are from the late Kikuhara Hatsuko (1899-2001), formerly a Living National Treasure and of the Todo Ongaku Kai of Osaka. Some of Ms. Yoshikami’s performance highlights have been for the National Cathedral’s “Prayer for Japan,” solo koto for the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, performances at the Freer/Sackler Galleries, the Japan Information and Culture Center of the Japanese Embassy, and for various universities, governmental institutions, museums across the US and in Europe. She has appeared on radio and television. As is the sole non-Western instrumentalist of the Friday Morning Music Club, she works closely with area composers and musicians to extend the artistic repertory of koto in America. She teaches koto privately in Bethesda. In addition, Dr. Yoshikami taught courses on the Japanese performing arts and music at the University of Maryland’s Honors Program and the University’s Study Abroad to Japan. She also held classes at Gettysburg College’s Music Department and the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design.
