Jia became fascinated with the shakuhachi in 1984 after hearing 'Distant Cry of Deer' by Masayuki Koga. Shortly thereafter he took up lessons briefly with Robin Hartshorne in Berkeley and Robin taught him how to play 'Sakura' and other Japanese folk songs.
He also learned how to make shakuhachi from the black bamboo that grows all over Northern California and later began purchasing bamboo from Monty Levenson in Willits. Over the years he has made many good, well playing shakuhachi from the fine, aged Japanese madake bamboo available through Monty.
"I remember my first sales to the Japanese music store in San Francisco in the late 80's and how elated I felt after they tried my instruments and gave them the thumbs up."

Jia is the founder of the 'Oak Street Shakuhachi Studio' in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood where he receives students, composes music and makes recordings.
He took a couple of lessons with Master Michael Gould who told him: "You can create your own honkyoku". Jia said, "I was so very honored to hear this coming from a teacher who spent 15 years studying and mastering shakuhachi in Japan".
Currently he imports vintage Japanese shakuhachi for sale in the US and over seas. These instruments are available on his Etsy.com shop: ZenShamanicArts and on Reverb.com. Many of these instruments come to him in need of minor repairs and with his background in making shakuhachi along with techniques learned from other makers, he refurbishes and renews their value.
He says, "Bringing an old neglected shakuhachi back to life to make available to a new owner brings me a great joy." This is one way he honors and preserves this sacred tradition which has so enriched his life.
Jia's personal website is: utaguchi.com where you can find out more about the fascinating and captivating world of shakuhachi.
*Enjoy the journey.

REVIEWS:
"Jia is an incredibly talented musician. To hear his music is to feel it - tantalizing and teasing every cell of the body into a state of tranquility and peacefulness. Indubitably a master of the art of music, emotions and ideas are expressed clearly without the need to ever speak a word. Through sound Jia is able to take you to other dimensions if you only close your eyes and allow yourself to take the ride. I feel incredibly honored to have journeyed with Jia on several occasions and look forward to many more in the days to come."
Tammy Niklas, Advanced Practitioner, Zen Shiatsu

“Thanks for the beautiful shakuhachi music. No need to study, no need to learn, and absolutely no need to represent. You're already there.”
All the best,

“Jia Senghe has elevated the atmosphere of our Zen Shiatsu student clinic with live shakuhachi, singing bowls and gongs. Our clients comment every week on the quality of the music. His playing is sensitive to the acoustics of the space and the logistics of our clinic environment, and is perfectly suited to relaxation and quieting the mind. I appreciate the way his music brings our clients' and therapists' awareness completely into the present moment.”

“I met Jia Senghe playing shakuhachi at the Point in Hyde Park this August, and asked him if he could teach me to play on the spot. I truly enjoy the lessons, his company, the flute made by him, and the practice. He is a wonderful musician and an excellent teacher.”
