Momose Hōdō

百瀨芳童

Momose Hōdō
6/23/1899 - ????

尺八 & Maker

Born in Matsumoto City, Nagano to a farming family, Momose Hōdō fell in love with the shakuhachi in elementary school and often played it to the delight of local villagers.
At 20 he began serious study of the shakuhachi under his relative, Aoki Reibo I.
A few years later he became a student of Araki Kodō III, becoming one of his highest-ranking pupils and a longtime member of Dōmonkai. Under Kodō III he earned the name Hōdō in 1924.
Though he was well-regarded as a player, (he performed four times on the radio during the late 1920's), Momose Hōdō was also a highly respected shakuhachi maker and had his own shop in Tokyo during the early 20th century.
