Born in Kumamoto in 1868.
Given name Tatsuzo.
Studied shakuhachi at Kogetsu-in in Yanagawa, and later studied under Hasegawa Tōgaku and Katsuura Shōzan. Around 1930, he became a student of Higuchi Taizan.
He became one of the most highly-regarded teachers in Tokyo from the late Meiji and Taisho periods.
Taught Myoan-style shakuhachi, first from his home in the Sugamo district and, later from the residence of the descendants of the famous Hosogawa family (former fuedal lords).
His students included many well-known figures in the shakuhachi world including Tani Kyochiku and Uramoto Setchō.
Miyogawa Nyozan is considered the founder of the modern Fuke-ha shakuhachi school.
