Kikuhara Koji

菊原 光治

Kikuhara Koji
Shamisen

Using Osaka as his base, Kikuhara Koji is actively involved in jiuta sokyoku performances and events both at home and abroad. He is an especially precious asset to the field of kamigatamai and an indispensable member of the Osaka jiuta sokyoku world, which would not exist without him.

After graduating from high school, Kikuhara left his hometown of Kuji in Iwate (located in Northeast Honshu) for Osaka. Since then, he has been at the head of the Osaka jiuta sokyoku world. Although he was originally initiated into the world of koto performance in Hachinohe, Aomori while still in high school, it was not until he moved to Osaka after graduation and began lessons under the Living National Treasure, Kikuhara Hatsuko (d. 2001), as a live-in student that he experienced training in earnest. It was as if he laid his hands on the shamisen for the very first time.

It is often said that if you love something, you're bound to improve and after moving to Osaka, Kikuhara made great progress in his art. In 1970, he was given the title, Kikutera. In 1972, he was licensed as having mastered the entire repertoire of both Nogawa school shamisen kumiuta and Koikuta school sokyoku. In November of 1992, he embarked on a new stage of his career when he inherited the name Kikuhara V as part of the celebration of his instructor Hatsuko's 88 year musical legacy.

With too many performances to date to recount, Kikuhara has given 12 individual recitals since his first in 1983. Among these, his eleventh recital in 1988 won him the highest accolades as well as the Award for Artistic Excellence in the Field of Music at the 1998 Agency for Cultural Affair's Culture Festival.

As a live-in student, not only did he have to learn singing and performing, but the distinctive Osaka dialect as well. Kikuhara now gives performances that preserve and perpetuate the unique style of kamigata utai from the Kyoto-Osaka region. He manipulates the Osaka dialect better than a native speaker….
