Shakuhachi

Nishimura Kazan (Nishimura Morizō) was born March 6,1885 in Geise Village, Kamifusa County, Okayama Prefecture. His family was engaged in farming, and after the death of his father, he took over the family affairs so, after graduating from Kawamye High School in his hometown in March 1901, he stayed at home and worked as a farmer.
In June 1905, he entered the Marines as a volunteer and, over the following years, he distinguished himself with different military assignments during wartime.
He began learning the shakuhachi while in the Marine Corps and, in February of 1912, he entered the training of Tozan-ryū shakuhachi master Hayashi Kōshun.
In November of the same year, he switched instructors to Nakamura Tofū, from whom he received his Shoden certification in May 1913.
In December of 1915, he completed the Chuden pieces (middle repertoire of the Tozan-ryū).
In February of 1917, he switched teachers once again to study with Kamiya Hakusan.
In September of 1924, he was promoted to Jun-shihan (associate instructor) and was given the name Kazan.
In February 1930, he was promoted to the rank of Shihan, the first of Kamiya’s students to do so.
Over time Nishimura had several of his own students become masters, and was a highly influential leader himself.
