Shakuhachi

Born July 18, 1897 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Yamamoto Gyōzan (birth name Moritarō), while working for the Hamamatsu Railway, began studying Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Imai Etsuzan in April of 1920.
Two years later, due to frequent business travels, he changed teachers and began further instruction with Hiratsuka Kōzan I.
In April of 1926 his work situation changed again, and he began studies with Katō Myōzan, earning his Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) license, which allowed him to take on his own students in 1929.
He received his Shihan in 1931.
He belonged to the Tozan-ryū Shunpū-sha.
His shakuhachi career covered more than 50 years.
