Ashigaki Kōmei studied shakuhachi under Kinko-ryu Shakuhachi master Tanaka Kōmei from the age of 10. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Music, and completed the graduate course at the same university. Studied under Goro Yamaguchi (living national treasure).
Graduated from the 45th NHK Hogaku Gakusha Nurturing Society and passed the "Hogaku Gakusha Audition" sponsored by Japan Traditional Culture. Performed in the National Theatre of Japan's "New Traditional Japanese Music for Tomorrow" and in the opening performance of the Bunka-Cho Arts Festival "Traditional Performing Arts Exchange", and in the performance "Performing Arts of Asia and the Pacific Region" organized by the Bunka-Cho Arts Festival in front of the Crown Prince and Princess (at the National Theatre Okinawa). Currently teaches at Asahi Culture Yokohama School, Yomiuri Culture Omiya School, and Kawaguchi School. Councilor of Chikumeisha. Presides over Mei-kai.
