Blind at an early age, Nakamura Yonekichi entered the school of Nakajima Kensaku in Kobe at the age of 7, where he learned Ikuta-style koto music and Nogawa-style shamisen. In 1893, he entered Kyoto Appoin School for the Blind and became a student of Takisai Furukawa, and in 1894, he transferred again to Kikunaka Goto in Osaka. In 1894, he became a pupil of Kikuzuka Yoichi on the kokyu, and gained a deep understanding of koto kumiuta from Terashima Hanano in Nagoya. n 1914 he became a teacher at the Hyogo Prefectural School for the Blind, and in 1931 he became the head of the Japan Tōdō Ongaku-kai. In 1952, he committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea with his students.
