Shakuhachi

Yasaka Reizan (Yasaka Eikichi) was born December 18, 1895 in Fushiki-cho, Toyama Prefecture.
His family was engaged in miso brewing, but he was not fond of arithmetic.
As a child he loved drawing and music.
At one time he tried to make a living as an illustrator, but his grandparents opposed him and he ended up becoming a shakuhachi player.
He began studying Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Nishimura Seizan in 1915.
He worked at the Fushiki Bank for many years, but in 1916 he joined the 35th Regiment of the Kanazawa Foot Soldiers, and was discharged in 1918.
In October 1920, Nishimura-sensei introduced him to Nakao Tozan, and Yasaka became a live-in apprentice of the Sōke.
In February of 1922 he accompanied the Sōke and another student, Katayama Yūzan on a trip to Tokyo.
In February of 1923, he took the associate teacher examination and was promoted to Jun-shihan and received the name Reizan.
In 1926 he was promoted to Shihan (Master Teacher)
On July 2, 1930, he performed for the Emperor at the Tokyo School for the Blind, and in the spring of 1931 he was appointed as a lecturer at the Nihon University College of the Arts, a position he held for many years.
He was selected as a member of the Tozan-ryū examination committee and the election committee several times.
He had students at Meiji University and Tokyo Geary School of Medicine,, as well as several other schools in the city, and also in Odawara and Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, among other locations.
He and his wife Kimiko had two sons, Hiroshi and Tadashi. His hobbies were smoking, writing and archery.
