June 2020: At the front end of learning. It's a big undertaking and I am enjoying it very much, although still at the Mary Had a Little Lamb stage. Currently exploring resources while I apply myself to the basics using print and YouTube sources as well as several CDs.

Started with a concert flute in 1962, quickly moved to the Highland Bagpipe in 1963. Currently play a variety of smallpipes, Border pipes, gaita, uilleann pipes, a fleet of penny whistles, and voice, all wonderful instruments, but none with the voice of the shakuhachi. There is, surprisingly, some crossover, at least conceptually, between the classical music of the Highland pipes, piobaireachd, and the classical music of the shakuhachi, both historically and musically. Even through strict practice I find that I can still smell some heather in the bamboo grove with regard to very small ornaments.

I hold a PhD in Anthropology and, although I will likely never get any closer to Japan than Hawaii (and that rarely) I have a profound interest in Japanese history and culture.
