Katsuura Shōzan

勝浦正山

Katsuura Shōzan
6/3/1856 - 1942

Shakuhachi

Katsuura Shōzan was born in Miho-mura, Kume-gun, Okayama Prefecture on June 3, 1856.
He became the last shakuhachi student to formally receive the repertoire of the Myoan Shinpū Ryū from his teacher, Ozaki Shinryū.
Katsuura's main student was Yoshikawa Shōko (also called Matsuura Shōko).
Some instruments with Katsuura's stamp still exist, but it is unknown whether he made them himself or they were made to his specifications.
Many of his students went on to create their own schools and lineages.
