Born the second son of the headmaster of the Chikuho School of shakuhachi, Sakai Shōdō began studies of traditional honkyoku pieces from his father and other masters from various schools. His dynamic interpretion of the traditional pieces are highly acclaimed and his performances have received several awards, including the Golden Record award from Columbia, the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival Award, and the Osaka Cultural Award. Along with teaching and recording, Sakai performs regularly throughout Japan. 1940 Born in Osaka. At the age of seven, began studies of Shakuhachi with father, Chikuoh. 1963 Appeared in NHK radio program "Classic Japanese Music" performing "Akita Sugagaki," "Sanya no Kyoku," and "Nagasaki Jyuji Kei." 1967 Performed with brother, Chikuho, the "Five Dialogues for Two Shakuhachis," at the 1st German-Japanese Contemporary Music Festival with a great success. 1969 Active as co-player with Chikuho of various duet numbers including the "Five Dialogues" at the 2nd German-Japanese Contemporary Music Festival, the same at Tokyo Recital of Chikuho Sakai, etc. Taught Shakuhachi performance of Chikuho School in Osaka, Kyoto, and other territories.
