Shakuhachi
Sakai Suizan began studying koto with Shinichi Yuize, then the shakuhachi with Hozan Yamamoto. After graduating from the NHK Training School of Traditional Japanese Music in Tokyo, he accompanied Yuize on a goodwill tour of Southeast Asia. Sakai was a founding member of the shakuhachi quartet Shakuhachi 1979. He has performed around the globe, appearing in the Asian Festival of Arts in Hong Kong; on tour with a kabuki company through England, Canada, and the United States; in concerts in Australia and New Zealand sponsored by the Japan Foundation, and on tour in Taiwan with Yuize and a kabuki group led by the famed kabuki actor, Tamasaburo Bando.
