Duo No. 1 for Shakuhachi and Koto

History:
| Duo No. 1 is a composition with distinctly American influences in both structure and sonority that presents new, energetic music for traditional Japanese instruments. In four-part form, the work begins with a lively section featuring an improvised koto solo. Section two is completely different in character, featuring very long, high notes on the shakuhachi with a repetitive melodic pattern in the koto. The third section is a slow blues motif that builds in intensity before introducing the final section, which is a modified reprise of section one this time with an improvised shakuhachi solo.
