This song was composed by Kineya Seiho after the death of a dear friend who, in one moment went from living a happy life to vanishing from this world. The song is a response to questioning how life can hold such a sudden change from happiness to sadness and an expression of experiencing that radical transformation. The key to playing this piece well is being able to make this sudden transition from one mode to another quickly.

The title "Chino" means that whatever is undertaken in life should be pursued in a logical and consistent manner until it is completed, as if that act is being indelibly recorded in the heart. In this work the composer, who is well-versed in the classical shakuhachi repertoire, seeks to display all of the wonderful aspects of the shakuhachi. This composition was first premiered in West Germany in 1970 by the world-renowned shakuhachi player Hozan Yamamoto, and since that time many people throughout the world have come to love this work.

Seiho Kineya is a contemporary composer and shamisen player who wrote Ichijo following the sudden death of a good friend. The rapidly shifting moods in the music represent the emotional upheaval from joy in life to loss in death - of that experience.

"Ichijo" is a piece that is started by the occurrence of two occasions that changed happiness into tragedy, this piece ponders about life and ultimately creates an answer, Although bars are used in the scores, a free flowing performance that does not adhere strictly to the beat is preferred.
