Poem (translated by John Tedford)
Maeuta:
So precious is my love,
like a comb box inlaid with jewels,
that twice or thrice
I have taken up my pen
to tell him of my desire.
And yet like ama [diver]
sent to dive and reap
the grasses at the bottom of the sea,
I suffer from what I see
yet cannot touch.
This very writing brush
on which I must rely
fills me with frustration.
At times, I wish my body
were like the dew
which quickly fades
from the thatched eaves.
Even the light of the stars...
TEGOTO
Atouta:
...grows dim
and darkness deepens.
How many nights
must I endure this lonely passion,
awaiting the dawn?
Gazing at clouded skies
I am truly at a loss.
The teardrops on my sleeve
overflow
and in the little sea of my inkstone
sink like jewels. | |
