Poem (translated by Tedford, John)
Maeuta:

Even this jeweled tower*
is a river of tears
and unrequited love
wherein I sink and drown.
Even given the chance to meet my lover
I suffer from the pangs of love.
Such a thing is love:
so transient and fleeting.

Atouta:

In the sudden downpour
we seek refuge at an inn,
[but soon] we part
reluctantly and sadly.
Nonetheless,
our vows
are no shallow ones.
"Please, let me fill it,
your sake cup.
Let us drink
this wine together."

* A euphemism for an "ageya" or house of assignation for
a prostitute and her client.
