This is a Modern piece . Kitakaze no Toki is also known as: Time of the North Wind. This piece was composed for shakuhachi by Miyata Kohachiro in 1983 .

In the season of the North wind. The roots of the grass lie under the ground. The breath of spring is saved for now. The shakuhachi blows the cold north wind and the bass koto describes the warmth lying dormant below the surface of the ground.
