This is a Modern piece . This piece was composed for shakuhachi by Hirose Ryohei in 1973 .

History (from Hirose Ryohei)
"Kakurin" or "Wood of the Crane". A sutra, a Buddhist sacred book portrays the time of Buddha's entering his nirvana(death) in the woods of sara trees. It says the trees withered up and the leaves turned ashen like that of a crane feather. This legend passed to Japan and became a living part of Japanese sentiment as an expression of sorrow.

The piece was commissioned by Hozan Yamamoto for a recital in 1973, and repeated by him elsewhere a further four times the same year.
