Obituary - 1972 Mr. Takei Banzan Takei Banzan of the Saga Prefecture Sankyoku Association had been receiving treatment for encephalomalacia for some time, but his illness suddenly deteriorated and he passed away at 5:30 p.m. on October 11th. He was seventy-six years old. The funeral service was held from 1:00 pm on October 13th at Myonen-ji Temple in Aikei-cho, Saga City, and condolence speeches were given by Nakahashi Muzan, representative of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Rakukai, and Kamura Ippū, representative of the Saga Prefecture Sankyoku Association. It was an auspicious occasion with many former students and general attendees. Mr. Takei, whose real name was Kinshichi, was born on June 30, 1896 in Tanosuji Village, Higashi-uwa District, Ehime Prefecture, joined the Kure Marine Corps in June 1912, and was discharged in October 1913. He served in Sasebo as a first class petty officer, but retired and became a shakuhachi expert. He trained under Tozan-ryū shakuhachi Master Kamiya Hakuzan beginning February 1920, then became an associate master (jun-shihan) 1924, master (shihan) 1931, and eventually grand master (dai-shihan). His career in the shakuhachi world spanned more than six decades. After the war, he returned to his home town and devoted himself to training the next generation. He contributed to the development of the Toyama Ryū-ha Rin-kai and was commended by the advisor of the Tozan-ryu Shakuhachi Gaku-kai and the head of the Saga Prefecture branch of the association. He also enjoyed playing Go as a hobby, and in particular, he reached the level of 5th dan. He was a member of Meiko Chikurinin Shabanzan Koji. His chief mourner is his widow, Chieko Takei (76, Aikei-cho, Saga City). (from his obituary published in Sankyoku Shinpō, December 1972)
