Linda Kakō Caplan is a Dai Shihan (Grandmaster) from the Chikushi koto and shamisen school headquartered in Fukuoka, Japan. Caplan received this rarely-conferred rank in 2007 and is the first and, to date, the only koto player of non-Japanese descent to attain this level. Her performing name, Kakō (歌香), was given to her in 1987 by her teacher, Chikushi Miyoko, iemoto of the Chikushi school.
Caplan is the Japanese Music course director at York University in Toronto, Canada. She also teaches koto and jiuta shamisen privately at her Toronto studio and, in her spare time, in a volunteer capacity at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. She continues to perform in concerts in Canada, Japan and the United States and at public, private and diplomatic events in North America.
