Born April 20, 1912 in Tokyo, Nishikawa Gyokuō (Nishikawa Kōzō) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Sone Kanae and Kawase Junsuke I. He started teaching in 1936. He was the head of the Gyokuō-kai and his career in the shakuhachi world lasted almost 50 years.
